The All-in-One Edition of Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away Film Comic is on sale for its best price yet. Released in late February for $35, the 856-page hardcover omnibus is discounted to only $27.90. This handsome doorstopper of a book collects all five of the out-of-print volumes of the direct comic book adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s most popular animated movie.
Individual volumes in the Studio Ghibli Film Comic series are hard to find for reasonable prices, but the newly issued All-in-One Editions offer a budget-friendly solution for this issue.
These graphic novels are notable because they use the original film animation cells for illustrations. They’ve all been rearranged and reformatted to look like comic book and manga panels with full-color illustrations. Spirited Away clocks in at a total of 856 pages, while My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service are 584 pages each. Ponyo’s All-in-One Edition is 592 pages.
For anyone who adores the art direction of Studio Ghibli movies, this is a pretty great way to “pause” a film so that you can focus on the smaller details of these beautifully animated stories. Because these comics use original cells and illustrations from the movies, they really can be viewed as reasonably priced art books, too.
Hopefully Howl’s Moving Castle, which also has a Film Comics series, will receive the All-In-One treatment next.
